Sometimes when we travel we end up staying in cool neighborhoods and not even realize it. We may even have lived in a cool neighborhood, though maybe it wasn’t cool at the time. We might currently be living in one and until we read some list, we don’t realize it. A reader sent me this article about the coolest neighborhoods in the world. Wow, not only had I visited and stayed in many of these hoods, I had even lived in a few of them. Does that make me cool 🙂
What Makes A Neighborhood Cool?
As I read through this article it got me thinking. What makes a neighborhood cool and why did many of these rank so high? Is it the people who live there, the architecture, the history of the area, the services offered in the hood, or something else? Surely it’s a subjective decision but subjective based on what?
And certainly over time neighborhoods wax and wane in their coolness. When you live long enough you observe many hoods going in and out of favor, and on a “cool” streak from time to time.
The article defines a cool neighborhood this way: “They’re places that reflect the very best of their cities – its culture, community spirit, nightlife, food and drink – all condensed in one vibey, walkable district. One-of-a-kind local flavor is important.”

The 38 Coolest Neighborhoods In The World
When I took a closer look at the 38 coolest neighborhoods in the world, I was startled. I had actually lived in a few of them, though not during their cool years. I have spent extended periods of time in a few of the hoods as well. Fun times for sure. Yet in many of these cities it also felt like there were many cool neighborhoods, not just mine.
In total, out of the 38 listed here, I have spent time in 25 of them. This really came as quite a surprise because I’m not at all the most well-traveled person I know. I can’t even tell you how many countries I’ve visited.
Take a look for yourself and see what you think.
For sure there are countries with cities and cool neighborhoods that did not make the list. That also came as a surprise.
And as mentioned before, it is, after all, a subjective list no matter how “expert” the writers of the article think themselves to be. The expression “different strokes for different folks” seems to fit lists such as this one as well.
Care to share any cool neighborhoods you would add on a list like this one?
Maybe your choice will end up on this list next time!
