It was only June when I posted the entry Delta’s De-Hubbed Memphis Flight Cuts Detailed, in which Delta announced that they were dropping the Memphis hub and cutting the 96 flights at MEM down to a number in the low 60s. Well, sadly slipped into yesterday’s very positive Q3 results was an additional negative Memphis announcement. Guess they need the aircraft  for the new Seattle hub… The Memphis Daily News reports that:

Delta will cut 24 additional flights out of Memphis, leaving Memphis International Airport with just 40 flights. Before the 2008 Delta-Northwest merger, the two airlines flew around 240 flights a day. Delta also will cut 126 jobs at Memphis, which includes closing a local flight attendant base.

Delta noted that they had to make the cuts due to poor profits with the current schedule and negative future bookings. Nonstop flights to Columbus, Louisville, and Nashville will all be slashed as Delta looks to further reduce regional jet flying.

For the quarter that ended Sept. 30, Delta’s net income jumped 31 percent to $1.37 billion, or $1.59 per share. Not counting gains from fuel hedges, the company would have earned $1.2 billion, or $1.41 per share.
