Finland Hotel Looking to Hire a Northern Lights Spotter

by Eric

This has to be one of the most unique jobs I have ever heard of. The Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Rovaniemi, Finland recently posted a job advertisement seeking someone whose only job would be to spot the Northern Lights!

Applicants need not have prior experience (though I do not suspect many people have “Northern Lights Watcher” on their resume), but you will need to be able to remain alert between 11 PM to 6:30 AM and be able to monitor for Northern Lights when they occur. Presumably at that point, it would be your job to notify hotel guests.

This is directly related to one of the perks of staying at the Arctic SnowHotel: they offer what they call a Northern Lights Alarm. They describe the service as follows:

Enormously increase your chance of spotting the legendary Northern Lights by using the Aurora Alarm service. The glass igloos are fitted with the Aurora Alarm service that immediately sounds an alarm to the igloos when the northern lights can be seen in the sky. When staying overnight in SnowHotel, the Aurora Alarm service gently wakes up guests to admire the wondrous Northern Lights. SnowHotel guests need to order the service separately from the hotel reception. The Aurora Alarm service is included in the accommodation rate and no extra fee will be charged for using the service.

Would you have any interest in this position?
