Fire Breaks out at Hilton NYC Midtown Hotel, Guests Complain Poorly Handled by Staff

by Adam

Guests at The New York Hilton Midtown woke up to fire alarms on Sunday morning as Firefighters worked to battle a rubbish blaze at the hotel.  The fire apparently started in a banquet room on the 4th floor of the property before 7am. Luckily, only one minor injury was reported due to smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  Meanwhile, guests at the hotel are voicing concern on social media that hotel staff were poorly prepared for a fire situation. Some guests were even tweeting the FDNY to find out what was going on as they were provided little information from the hotel and the stairways were packed:

We were on 31 and the smoke was thick. Evacuation went smooth, but the loudspeaker was saying to stay in your room….No way! Remember Vegas 1980 MGM (Now Bally)…..That was the only issue that we had….Could have provided better direction over the intercom…..I don’t get why folks grabbed their luggage….It’s a fire! Get the hell out!

Amen I am right there with you I was on the 34th floor and there was smoke. We were poorly directed and I let them know that today. They of course had many excuses. Hell stay in your room while smoke is in the hall way of the 34th floor? REALLY

In some cases, you will be expected to stay in your room. Yes, really!

We were woken up by people running and shouting “fire”. Alarms were very poor only heard when we opened the door and still very low. We ran straight to stair well to join the other family’s still not knowing what was going on. No info over speakers at that time so very frightening especially for those carrying children and the elderly. We were on the 23rd floor, upon reaching the lower levels we could smell the smoke. At ground level we were told the fire was under control. Plenty of fire fighters in the lobby standing around so assumed it wasn’t a big fire. It took hotel staff a very long time to get info to their guests and get organized with the large amount of people. Eventually coffee and water was put out for guests and some moved into conference rooms. Luckily it was a small fire but hotel needs to improve alarm system and have automated information to assist their guests. We choose to take the stairs back up (about two hours later)where we met people with their luggage ,who needed to check out due to flights as lifts were still not operating. Needless to say we didn’t sleep well that night.
