Linen Technology Tracking, a Miami-based company, recently patented a radio-frequency identification chip designed to keep real-time inventory of frequently misplaced or stolen goods…aka towels! The company reports on their Facebook page that a prominent Miami property reduced Pool Towel/Lounge Chair Cover loss by 50% and as a result now saves $5,884.00 per month thanks to their RF tracking technology. While the technology was first utilized largely by boutique hotels and smaller chains, certain Sheraton properties are now in on the tracking as well.
The Huffington Post reports that:
The company’s initial goal was to let hotels track which linens had made it from the hotel to the cleaners and back again, but the chips have also proven handy for keeping tabs on stolen goods that guests think have slipped out unnoticed. “One hotel uses the chips to monitor the elevator banks.” “Any time one of their towels passes through the elevator bay, Housekeeping gets an alert.”
Dont’ get all concerned though…while the chips let hotels know that a towel or linen has left the premise, it cannot provide exact tracking coordinates!
