The man who slapped a 19 month old toddler in the face last February aboard a Delta flight from Minneapolis (MSP) to Atlanta (ATL) has been sentenced to eight months in prison for the incident. The boy was slapped when he started crying as the plane descended. From the AJC:

The toddler’s mother, Jessica Bennett, told investigators Hundley told her to “to shut that (n-word) baby up” before he slapped the 19-month-old on the face. Bennett and her child were seated in the seat next to Hundley’s. Hundley was on his way to Atlanta to take his only child off life support after his son had overdosed on insulin, Hundley’s attorney, Marcia Shein, said in court filings. Shein said Hundley had been awake 24 hours straight prior to the altercation on the plane and that his son died days later.

I have no tolerance for bigotry, but I think this sentence is excessive. I caveat that statement with the fact that I do not know this man’s prior criminal history or the physical damage done to the young boy.

mmmmmm…no. You never get to hit a toddler–ESPECIALLY one that’s not even yours. But doesn’t matter…never. Equate that to beating a dog. Up for 24 hours or not. You can yell, scream, cry and stomp all you want, but you don’t lay your hand on someone.

Garrett, I am not sure if you are commenting on my comment or on the post. I agree that what the man did was wrong. I do not, however, believe that such an act warrants an 8 month jail term. How many folks would be in prison today for similar behavior towards their own children. Many people do not share your belief about corporal punishment, especially of their own children. Just something to think about. My reply was merely commentary on what I consider to be an excessive sentence.

This should be a deterrent.
I have unpleasant days but I do not take it out on a helpless kid, nor anybody else. This could have led to injury and permanent damage. I can only think of how many would be harmed if a lenient sentence sent a different message.

He was on probation for a dui and had a prior conviction of assault in VA. He agreed to a 6 month sentence and the judge knocked it up to 8 based on the priors. This is why it is more than normal.
