PSA: LaGuardia Airport Now Requires Shuttle Bus To Taxi Stand

by Chris Dong

New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is undergoing a massive multi-billion dollar revamp that will last for several more years. On the plus side, parts of the gorgeous new Terminal B have already been opened, including new lounges.

Traveling to and from LaGuardia remains a nightmare though. If you need another reason not to take a taxi from LaGuardia, here’s a good one:

Taxi stands are being relocated during peak times at the airport’s main complex of Terminals B, C, and D. Taxi riders are required to take a 15 minute shuttle bus (or longer, depending on traffic) to a taxi stand near Terminal A (Marine Air Terminal). The only airline at Terminal A is JetBlue.

That means if you want to take a cab into town from LaGuardia (and are not flying JetBlue), you’ll have to do the following.

  1. Wait for a shuttle bus.
  2. Ride the shuttle bus through congested LGA traffic.
  3. Wait in the taxi stand at Terminal A.
  4. Ride your cab again through traffic.

Will This Affect Rideshares Like Uber And Lyft?

Thankfully, no. If you need to take a car into Manhattan or elsewhere in New York City, using a rideshare app is the way to go. Here is how you find your ride for each terminal at LaGuardia:

  • For Terminal A (Marine Air Terminal), head directly outside from arrivals or baggage claim.
  • For Terminal B, exit from the upper level. Follow the green “Car Services” signs to the blue covered walkway (only about a 5 minute walk) on level 2.
  • For Terminals C and D, head directly outside on the departures level.

Need tips on how to get to Manhattan from JFK Airport? We’ve got you covered there too.

Rideshare Companies At LaGuardia

If you haven’t taken a ride with any of these companies, feel free to use my referral code for credit towards your first ride (and I’ll get ride credit too). Via is not as commonly known, but I actually find their pricing for shared rides to be some of the lowest in and around New York City.

  • Uber: $2 off your first 3 Uber rides
  • Lyft: $5 off your first Lyft ride
  • Via: $10 off your first Via ride
  • Juno: 30% off your Juno rides for a month

Whatever you do, avoid taking a taxi from LaGuardia in the near future, especially during peak hours.

Thank you for writing this. I’ve search for about an hour to find information about ride sharing with the new change for taxi pick up at terminals c and d and this information is extremely helpful!

Do rescheduled Black Lane cars have to park and wait at terminal A like taxis or do they get a special place at the other terminals like Uber, etc.

Hey Rebecca, there should be a special place for rideshares. The info in the post is just for yellow cabs only.

Very helpful, need a bit more detail
So what are considered peak hours for taxis available at terminal B So for example can I get a taxi outside Terminal B on a Friday at 1:30 pm

Hi Patricia, your best bet would be take Uber or Lyft — you’re guaranteed to not have to take shuttle. Just follow signs to the parking garage, it’s a few minutes walk from Terminal B.

Do you know what this means for a private car trying to pick up passengers?
thanks

Nothing has changed for private vehicles as far as I know, Suzanne!

Let me give everyone a heads up. If you come into C or D DO NOT WAIT on the RED Route bus. They do not have enough of them. The last 4 times I have been there in the past two months I have waited between 40-70 minutes for the RED route bus. Take the Taxi bus. It drops off in the same area as the rental car bus drop off and they run lots of the Taxi buses

Dear Chris,
My husband is handicapped and we are arriving from Toronto on Air Canada at around 2 pm (Terminal B). Is Uber the best option and where do we meet the car/driver.
Thanks,
Mithu

Hi Mithu, there is a dedicated pickup zone for Uber and other ridesharing companies in the parking garage adjacent to Terminal B. The app will direct you to which exact location to go to within the garage. It’s about a 5 minute walk overall. I would recommend that option.

I only fly into LaGuardi once every 4 years, it’s a conference thing. Does this rerouting apply to SuperShuttle pickup or GoAirlink NYC shuttles? Since I haven’t been here since the construction started, I just want to make sure I know where to get a shuttle, not a taxi, to get to the Marriott Marquis where I’ll be staying.

Hey Jenny, nope it should only apply for NYC taxis — everything else should remain the same!

Even the uber pickup area is horrible at LaGuardia terminal c and D. Takes the uber 15 min to get to the terminal and then another 15 just to navigate out of the congestion during busy hours. Makes me wonder why paying the high taxes for NY is worth it when I get less and less of public amenities and greater inconvenience

Chris…
I am flying into LGA 8-24 on Delta… Terminal c and d…. How difficult is it to find a Lyft? Should I simply rent a car with all of the chaos at LgA>

Chris Dong July 16, 2019 - 5:40 pm

Uber and Lyft shouldn’t be affected, only NYC yellow taxis.

Thanks so much! Just signed up for Via. Are they as visible as the big guys at LGA?

Reply
Chris Dong August 4, 2019 - 2:02 pm

Yep Via has a pretty big presence in NYC! Not quite as big as Lyft or Uber, but Via is often cheaper. And their vans are actually much more visible since most are branded outside.

CHRIS, HEADING TO LGA IN OCTOBER WITH ELDERLY AND RENTING A CAR AT ALAMO. THERE WILL BE 4 OF US. CAN WE GET AN UBER/LYFT FROM TERMINAL B AMERICAN AIRLINES TO THE RENTAL CAR CENTER? I HEAR THE BUS IS A NIGHTMARE AND WE WILL HAVE LOTS OF LUGGAGE. ANY IDEA OF THE COST, AS IT IS A SHORT DISTANCE.

This seems like another terrible blow to the taxi community. Uber, Lyft, Via can all clamor to find their match in a sea of black sedans… while an organized stream of yellow taxis is congestion? Sounds like Uber paid for the real estate and we’re now forced to make the lazy decision. This is not for the greater good.

Whether you are dropped off at the airport by taxi or uber – are you let off at the terminal or do you have to take a shuttle to the termina,?

Reply
Chris Dong January 7, 2020 - 9:33 pm

Hey Peg! Drop offs aren’t affected as far as I know for either taxis or rideshare.
