Delta Using UA’s JFK-LAX/SFO Slots…for LAX/SFO with a few widebodies

by Adam

Yesterday, United announced that they were completely withdrawing from JFK in October and moving their p.s. transcontinental flights to Newark. As part of the move, United agreed to trade its JFK slots to Delta in exchange for Delta slots at EWR (pending regulatory approval). When the announcement was made there was no word from Delta on how it plans to use the additional JFK slots or which flights would likely be reduced or canceled at Newark.  Well, the AP is now reporting that Delta plans to use the slots for more Delta operated JFK-LAX/SFO flights.

Delta plans to use the additional slots at JFK to add an extra daily flight to and from Los Angeles and use larger, two-aisle planes on three of its daily flights to San Francisco, said Delta spokesman Anthony Black.

Not all the surprising, but it could make things harder for UA in their plan to transition premium market fliers to Newark. In my opinion, superior premium options are already available at JFK from American, JetBlue…and even Delta.

Kind of crazy that when I first got into this hobby in 1999/2000 legacy United was flying from JFK to LHR, NRT, HKG, EZE, and GRU/GIG using 744, 777, and 763 aircraft. JFK/LAX was operated up to 8x per day and they even flew to a few non hub domestic / Caribbean spots like SJU and BOS!

ok so that accounts for 2 slots, what about the others?

And the widebody announcement is interesting, adding ~50 seats to each of those 3 flights, for a total increase of about 150 seats, or 1 plane’s worth of people. So increase of 2 flights worth of capacity to SFO.
