Back in 2013, United introduced new uniforms from Cintas. Instead of selecting a well-known fashion designer like many of their competitors, United opted for Cintas, a wholesale provider of all types of uniforms for the corporate world. Many saw the decision as another example of former CEO Smisek choosing price over quality…much like the famous coffee decision. Employees complained that the uniforms were cheap, baggy, uncomfortable, and not functional. Flaps on the coats were not properly attached and had to be tucked into pockets according to many flight attendants and customer service agents.
Well, change has finally come! The Chicago Business Journal reports that United has started to quietly introduce the “new” uniforms. Cintas manufactured the uniforms once again, though apparently United management mandated higher-quality fabrics and functionality. United employees who are receiving the new uniforms will be given a monetary allotment to fully cover the updated uniforms.
A United spokeswoman said the new uniforms are made of a more durable fabric. Adjustments in the fit of blazers were made to give wearers of the uniforms more flexibility of movement. Pockets, which were a problem on the original uniform, also have been reworked. The uniform color palette — royal blue, light gray and navy — remains essentially the same as it was in the 2013 uniforms.
