12 Travel Friendly Tech Gifts For the Holiday Season

by Eric

It is the holiday season and many of us are trying to figure out what to buy for the traveler in our lives (or perhaps, give ourselves something nice!).  PCWorld discusses 12 travel friendly tech gifts that you may want to add to your wish list this year.

brunton-knife

My favorite on the list was the Brunton Power Knife.  This $25 gadget packs plenty of tools, is easy to carry, and is not even a knife! It’s shaped like a pocket knife (enjoy TSA!) that contains adapter ends to connect to most of today’s most popular tech products: Apple Lightning, Apple 30 pin, and micro USB. It also has a standard USB connector, which you can connect to a power source to charge up your gadgets on the go.  The form factor on this device is beautiful, and it keeps all of your loose cords in your bag from catching on other objects.

dlink-router

Another must have on the list is a good travel router: the D-Link DIR-510L. The router fits neatly in your carry-on as it is only slightly longer than an iPhone 5 and about twice as thick.  It has both an AC adapter and its own battery.  And setting it up as a wireless hotpot is intuitive, and supports both 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n networks and 5GHz 802.11a or 802.11ac networks. In PCWorld’s reviews, the DIR-510L was the fastest travel router among four tested.

trakdot

Finally, in the interests of making sure my baggage doesn’t get lost, the Trakdot Luggage Tracker is something to consider.  Recently, I discussed the AirBolt, which may be the newer/cooler version of the TrakDot.  However, it is not available until 2016, and if you need something now, then the TrakDot is a viable option.  When you’re packing for a trip, you turn on the Trakdot, and once packed into your luggage, Trakdot notifies you by email and/or SMS when it reaches an airport. The company says Trakdot knows enough to go to sleep when it’s in flight, and awaken when it reaches its destination. If that destination isn’t the proper one, you can locate the bag and get it shipped to you.
