Santiago sure has been the destination for some pretty amazing fares lately! There is a great fare right now from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Santiago, Chile (SCL) for just $170 roundtrip. The flights are operated by Copa Airlines, and will route through Panama City (PTY). There is pretty decent availability between March and June, 2017, with Wednesday flights being the best.
There is an overnight layover in Panama City on the outbound. Though depending on the flight between Panama City and Santiago, you might get almost 22 hours in Panama City, of which you can totally make a day trip. I know there are quite a few Hilton Category 2 hotels there (requiring just 10,000 points a night) that are very nice, like the Hampton by Hilton Panama (which actually used to be a Category 1 hotel!)
You can search for the flights on Google Flights, which can display fares across a wide variety of dates quickly. With fares like this one, there is always a chance that the airline will choose not to honor it. For that reason, I wouldn’t book any non-refundable hotel nights or activities just yet, until your tickets are confirmed and all the dust is settled, so to speak.
You can book through sites like Expedia or Priceline, which will allow you to cancel the flight within 24 hours with no charge.
These tickets appear to book into Economy T Class, and since Copa is part of Star Alliance, there are plenty of options with crediting your miles. The IAD-PTY-SCL round-trip itinerary will total 10,068 miles round-trip, for those who might be thinking about doing a mileage run. United will award 50% of the flown miles as award miles. Alternatively, you can credit your flights to Air Canada for 100%.
Will you take advantage of this deal?
