Uber riders who also had a Starwood Preferred Guest account have been able to benefit from linking their accounts. Up until now, riders could earn 1 SPG point per $1 spent on their Uber rides, when they were not staying at a Starwood property, up to a maximum of $10,000 per year.
However, SPG just released an updated Terms and Conditions which essentially cuts your earning potential in half. In their new earning scheme:

This goes into effect on February 1, 2017.
To try and smooth over potentially ruffled feathers, SPG is offering you a chance to earn 5 Starpoints per US$1 spent with Uber, for stays from February 1–28, 2017.

That’s a real bummer. This was a great way to earn a few extra Starpoints here and there. I would actually choose Uber over Lyft because of this. I guess there’s less incentive to do so now, unless you’re staying at an SPG property.
