First Look: Iberia Unveils New Uniforms for Cabin Crew

by Giovanni

Iberia has finally released their new uniforms developed by Catonian designer Teresa Helbig and they’re certainly eye-catching. The modern look was unveiled on the catwalk on the final day of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid.

The new range will be rolled out to Iberia’s over 6,500 pilots, flight attendants, and other uniformed staff in May 2020.

Iberia’s Partner: Teresa Helbig

The choice of a designer from Catalonia, Teresa Helbig, is an interesting one for Spain’s flag carrier which recently launched a Madrid stopover program. That said, they couldn’t have picked a more qualified partner. Helbig’s award-winning pedigree includes the L’Oreal Paris Prize for Best Collection at Madrid Fashion Week and the Glamour Magazine Award for Best Spanish Designer.

Her collection for Iberia makes her the latest in a line of fashion luminaries including Manuel Pertegaz, Elio Berhanyer, and Adolfo Domínguez to design Iberia uniforms. She is the first woman to design Iberia uniforms.

As the first women to design Iberia uniforms, Teresa Helbig notes that the "women’s trousers break free from the usual rigidity, adapting more gracefully to a woman’s movement." Iberia photo.

New Iberia Uniforms

Iberia presented the new uniforms during Madrid Fashion Week with more than 20 outfits for both their male and female crew.

Helbig said her designers were intended to be “very current, serene, [and] formal” with a special focus on accessories. The collection is expansive. It includes dresses, blouses, suits, skirts, pants, shirts, coats, handbags, cardigans, blazers, scarves, knitted jumpers, polo shirts, and neckties.

Iberia even developed special uniform items for pregnant employees. According to Helbig, the uniforms “embody edginess, proximity, vitality, excellence, and helpfulness” which are said to be Iberia values.

According to Iberia, “blue, red, yellow and natural hues prevail. The sea-blue stands for balance. Red and yellow represent passion, youth and energy, and the natural colours give that extra bit of glamour.”

"We envisioned an outfit that everyone could wear in their everyday life," Teresa Helbig said. Iberia photo.

The Upshot

The new uniforms are edgy but classy, and possibly the best new uniform unveiled by any major carrier recently.

They look like something cohesive and professional for the workplace while being street-worthy enough that employees would be happy to wear them on their time off on the town. I can’t wait to see them start being rolled out in May.

Too bad Iberia can’t figure out how to fix the Iberia Avios mess they created. It’s been three weeks with no word from Iberia. Never going to buy a ticket on Iberia again.

I just got an email from Iberia this morning acknowledging that i’d contacted them. Nothing beyond that, though.

I had a new account, booked 10 flights(not all similar routes), sent in scanned passport as Iberia requested and pdf’s of tickets. Five times! Still absolutely no response from Iberia. Have any new accounts received their Avios?

Wow, too bad the crew in the illustrations are all apparently 7 feet tall and 80 lbs. Wonder what actual, living humans will look like in the new uniforms?

Why feature a 70 year old at the forefront. Age discrimination is an appropriate response to situations like this. In service jobs 37,000 feet in the air, we should have young flight attendants in their 20s and 30s who are fit and able to do the job properly. Being a flight attendant doesn’t have to be and shouldn’t be a lifelong position. These men and women should move on to office jobs better suited to raising a family. Maybe a purser in their 40s is ok but beyond that it is ridiculous.

These are a train wreck if ever there was. Absolutely TERRIBLE, TASTELESS. Yuck!!!!!!!!

The previous uniform – costume was just the opposite; unparalleled – nonpareil. Beautiful.
