Air New Zealand stole some of the Aussie thunder yesterday with the announcement that it will be launching nonstop flights from Auckland to the east coast of the US.
Qantas has been in the headlines for its publicity stunt research flights between the east coast of Australia and New York and London. Meanwhile, the airline’s Oceania cousin, Air New Zealand, said it will be starting new nonstop service between Auckland and Newark, NJ — with relatively little fanfare.
Details On The New Air New Zealand New York Flight
That flight is within range for Air New Zealand’s existing Boeing 787-9 so there isn’t a need to order a new type of aircraft like Qantas is doing.

Air New Zealand will operate a three times weekly, year-round service. The flight time will be approximately 17 hours and 40 minutes southbound and 15 hours 40 minutes northbound.
Why Newark instead of JFK? Because alliances (Star Alliance) and joint ventures (United Airlines).
United’s hub is in Newark and will feed traffic to Air New Zealand. However, I imagine there will be a lot of originating passengers in the New York City area who would want a direct option to New Zealand.

Air New Zealand code share service will be offered on 90 United flights across the US. United operates more than 400 flights overall from its Newark hub.
Air New Zealand’s new flights between New York-Newark and Auckland will be available for purchase beginning in November.

On the flip side, Air New Zealand will be eliminating its Auckland to London service via Los Angeles. It’s sad to see another fifth freedom flight go the way of the dodo bird.
