Is it possible that an airport actually has a lost luggage track record this good? Which airport and what are these bragging rights all about, you ask? Before I tell you, let me preface this by saying I was shocked when I read this news. It’s actually an airport I’ve flown to and transited through quite a few times and I’d list it as one of my least favorite airports.
Maybe I need to rethink my stance and consider that perhaps I’m judging KIX without including what’s super important to so many: no lost luggage. That’s right. Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan boasts a remarkable record since it opened thirty years ago. The airport has never lost a bag!
Pro Tip: Do you Pruvo all your hotels stays? If not, do what I do and let Pruvo monitor your reservations for price drops. It’s free and it’s the easiest way to save money on all your hotel rooms.
Airport Lost Luggage Statistics
If you’ve never had your luggage gone missing, you’re lucky. Thousands of bags go missing every day. And I’d bet any statistic you read on lost luggage is underestimated. In the U.S. alone, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics states that domestic flights lose 3 million bags every year.
Sure, bags most often do eventually show up. It’s a huge hassle, though, and a really stressful way to start or end your travels.
Kansai International Airport Luggage Backstory
Kansai International Airport opened in 1994. It claims to have a perfect baggage streak. It’s no small airport, either. Last year it handled nearly 14 million passengers. The airport won an international award for best baggage delivery eight times.
And it’s not just the winning streak of never having lost luggage. It’s also about the luggage handling philosophy and HOW this all gets accomplished. Quite amazing, really, in the attention to detail and focus of the many teams responsible for handling luggage.
Will Kansai’s Airport Be Able To Continue Its Winning Streak?
Next year, 2025, will create Kansai International Airport’s greatest challenge yet. Osaka is hosting the World Expo, which is expected to draw more than 20 million visitors. Somehow after reading this article and learning about how baggage operations work at the airport, I don’t think Kansai’s record will be broken.
Okay, I can’t help but ask, what’s your worst airport/airline losing luggage story? And if you’ve flown through KIX did you notice anything special or different about the way they managed luggage?
