IHG Share Forever Promotion – Do the Promised Points Post Properly?

by Eric

IHG Share Forever Promo

In mid-April 2015, IHG launched their Share Forever promotion.  In this promo, you had to achieve a certain number of stay nights, and at certain levels above that minimum threshold, IHG would reward you with free points, and/or free nights.  The interesting part of this promotion was that you not only received bonus points for meeting a threshold, but you also received bonus points to share.  Of course, smart travelers soon figured out that you could ‘share’ these bonus points with yourself!

My Share Forever Target

IHG assigned me a minimum goal of staying 3 nights and earning 3,000 points.  There have been conflicting reports on FlyerTalk of how long it takes for the bonus points to post, and also for the shared bonus points to be received.

Meeting IHG Targets

In the promotion period (5/1/2015 to 9/7/2015), I had no IHG stays planned.  However, when this promo was launched, I changed a stay in Washington DC from Hilton to IHG in order to hit the bonuses.  Guess these hotel chain promos do work to attract business!  For this trip, I was only targeting the main goal of staying 3 nights.  My next step up in the promo was “4 Nights Above Goal” for an extra 2,000 points for me, and 2,000 bonus points to share.

Share Forever Points Posted Promptly

Shared Award Email Received

My IHG stay in Washington DC ended on August 1, 2015.  For this promo, I chose to be extra generous with myself, and sent the bonus points to my email address.  The timeline for my points posting was:

  • Stay ended August 1.
  • +3 days: Base points for the stay posted.
  • +3 days: Received email to inform me that I had passed a Share Forever threshold and would receive points for myself, and to share.  Promptly shared those bonus points with myself.
  • +6 days: Share Forever points (not the to-be-shared ones) posted.
  • +9 days: IHG elite status bonus points posted.
  • +10 days: Share Forever shared bonus points posted.

I have always had great experiences with IHG promo points posting on time, without having contact them.

What have your experiences been like with IHG promos?

The requirements they’ve had for me the last couple of promos have made it not worth participating. I’m now well over a year with no paid stays. I used to stay there a lot, but the poor individualized offers had the opposite of their presumably desired effect on me.

Which brand have you frequented more often since you dropped IHG?

I have been staying at SPG more often lately. Not that their offers are so overwhelming, but it has just fit my travel plans better.

Often Comfort Inns with the 8K bonus for two stays (almost always one-night stays for me). In the DC area, where I go weekly on business, the SPG and some others would hit the expense report a little too hard. Wyndham has drawn me in a few times where I have gotten 3,500 to 6,500 per one night stay including using Wyndham credit card and one time 3K bonus. When I’ve used Wyndham points for non-business nights with the 3,000 points plus cash the value easily hits $20 per thousand. Getting a $70+ to $130+ value for staying one reimbursed night is tough to beat.

DC can be stupendously expensive! It always baffles me who is actually staying at some of these properties at the rates they charge.

Hmm, didn’t realize you could share the points with yourself. I had a stay in late July and think it took a while for the points to appear, but I wasn’t paying too much attention.

Yep. It’s a nice little gimmick that helps you rack up the IHG points.
