JetBlue Catch-Up – Halting All Flights @ NYC & Boston Airports

by Adam

JetBlue announced that it was suspending all flights from its New York area airports, as well as its Boston hub from 5pm EST today until 10am tomorrow, canceling about half its daily schedule (about 900 flights) in order to “catch-up” and reposition planes and crew.  In an announcement earlier on its website as reported by Bloomberg, JetBlue stated:

This pause in service will allow us to catch up and reposition our planes in order to meet demand. Delays and cancellations during this week’s winter storm placed planes and crews away from their previously scheduled routes. While our team has been working to repair schedules by bringing crews and planes back “into position” and resume normal operations, further cancellations are still occurring as crews exceed their allowed duty times. While we have to reduce operations in our Northeast cities today, we’ll take the opportunity to use some of those planes and crews for extra sections between cities where we they’re most needed and move crews in preparation for starting back up on Tuesday.

A JetBlue spokesperson added, “there were a lot of unforeseen events that were really outside of our control that were impacting our ability to operate correctly. We know there are a lot of upset customers in a lot of places that are waiting to get home from the holiday. We’re trying to get as many people moving as quickly as possible as soon as this weather abates a little bit.”

The announcement impacts service at JFK, LGA, EWR, and BOS. Their 1800 number is also down…

I generally love Jetblue. I am a mosaic member and flew probably 20 times last year and spent 5000 dollar or more on overall flights.
I got stranded in Las Vegas my 11PM Red Eye Friday was canceled. They weren’t able to re-book us until MONDAY night at 11:30 PM redeye back to JFK. AT this point we took a refund and booked a US AIR flight on Sunday for na extra 100 dollars each that got us home Sunday Night.
Lucky we did as the Monday 11:30PM Flight that they had originally offered us was canceled today as well. If we hadn’t rebooked on a different airline we could have been stuck there for a week.

A bit scary that as a member of their only frequent flyer level I was stuck 3-4 days with no other options.
