Rumor – Turn Down Service Coming to United Global First on Nov. 1st

by Adam

A post on  by uaord2000 notes that turn down service is coming to United beginning November 1st.

This was communicated to flight attendants internally. Beginning Nov 1st, in international first class (global first) we will offer a turn down service including placing a mattress on the seat in the “lie-flat” position and placing the duvet on top with two large pillows. This was tested on a few flights and was very well received by passengers.

I experienced my first turn down service on a Qantas flight from LAX to Melbourne (booked with AAdvantage miles) about eight years ago and it definitely was more valuable than one would think. It included placing down a mattress, tucking in a form fitted sheet, and making up the bed with another sheet, duvet, and pillows.  Turn down service is already provided by many airlines based outside the US, but American is currently the only other US carrier offering the service.  I love the post in the same thread by 4engines4lnghll who notes that AA is doing the same thing expect for their new program you take the seat with you 😉

No official communication from United yet, but with an expected November 1st launch, we should be able to confirm soon whether this story is accurate…

PS – Today is the final day to win a seat next to Randy on the Star Megado 4, you can enter here and follow the links to enter all the other blogger contest pages as well.

I’m happy for this change. I’m looking forward to a trip starting with IAD – MUC in November and will be happy to try to sleep in a more bedlike environment. I generally sleep fairly poorly on planes and do think that the transition from a seat with movies to a bed like setup helps a good bit.

FYI: Interesting to notice how on FT the thread immediately moved into – but they are not providing pajama’s…

I hope this is correct. Those ua business first is very uncomfortable to sleep in. Why can’t they cover the backing of the seat so I don’t always have to get up and find the dropped item. Maybe that why many FA uses flashlights.

I have a feeling that FAs will be annoyed and upset once a pax requests the turn down service…

Interesting move, but I doubt it will make a difference in overall experience of soft / hard product. Agree with the comment the FA’s will be annoyed. I flew ORD-MUC just last week and it was horrible, both in hard product as in service (really did not dare to push the call button for requests or even get into the galley wityh requests). Never again a US carrier, not even in F. Compare that to QF, TG and LH in F, it is a whole different world.
