Wow, British Airways is on fire with their recent service expansions to the US! Just in the past 2 weeks, they have announced new services to Fort Lauderdale and New Orleans, but they are back with a new route announcement!
Starting March 28, 2017, British Airways will fly between Oakland and London-Gatwick. This new route will be offered 4 days a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The schedule is as follows (Tuesday flights depart 65 minutes later):
- BA 2279: London Gatwick (LGW) – Oakland (OAK), 1020/1315
- BA 2278: Oakland (OAK) – London Gatwick (LGW), 1505/0925+1
The flight will be operated by a three-class 777-200, with 48 Club World (Business Class) seats, 24 World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) seats, and 203 World Traveller (Economy) seats. Business Class on British Airways is not the most aspirational product. With a 2-4-2 configuration, it’s also tighter than many other Business Class seats. If you manage to avoid the middle set of 2 seats though, it’s actually not a terrible seat.

British Airways is releasing 4 Economy seats and 2 Business Class seats per flight for award travel. However, British Airways levy heavy fuel surcharges, so I’m not usually super excited about new British Airways routes on the award front. On this route, you will pay ~$290 in taxes and surcharges each way if you redeem for a coach award. Business Class will set you back ~$480 each way. Just for reference, though, here is what it will cost in American Airlines miles or British Airways Avios.
- Economy: 30,000 AA miles or 25,000/16,250 BA Avios (peak/off peak) one-way
- Business: 57,500 AA miles or 75,000/62,500 BA Avios (peak/off peak) one-way
For the inaugural flight, you can actually get an Economy seat for about $650 round-trip, which is not terrible for a flight from the West Coast.
Fly between Oakland and London-Gatwick for less than $650
This will be British Airways’ 25th destination to the US, and 5th destination to California. They currently fly daily between London and San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), San José (SJC) and San Diego (SAN).
