People often ask me what they could do to keep expiring points or miles alive. It’s a good question and a concern we all have. There are a number of simple ways to keep miles and points from expiring. Even given the many options, my answer to this question is usually the same: online shopping portals.
How Do Airline and Hotel Shopping Portals Work?
Many of the major airlines have online shopping portals. And it’s not just airlines. Many major hotel chains have shopping portals. You can do an online search for the rewards program of those miles and points you want to keep alive. Use the phrase “online shopping portal”. If you do not already have an account with these airlines or hotels, create an account with the online shopping portal.
Think of an item you need to purchase and a store that would normally sell it. Click on the link for that store. Purchase your item. You will be credited with the miles or points that will keep your expiring miles or points alive. This purchase resets their expiration date!
Please note that this will not work with all rewards programs. Some have miles that expire after a certain amount of time, regardless of what you do. However, the online shopping portal strategy suggested above will work in many situations.
If you are buying something you would have purchased anyhow, then it really did not cost you anything to keep your expiring miles alive. And don’t forget, you will be indeed be rewarded with bonus miles and points for your purchase.
