Emirates to Airbus – “We Will Buy 100 More A380s…if you give us a Neo engine upgrade”

by Adam

While at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Emirates president Tim Clark increased pressure on Airbus to commit to upgrading the A380 (an aircraft type that received no new orders in all of 2014). Clark told Bloomberg that Emirates would order up to 100 more jets if Airbus were to offer a Neo A380 upgrade.

“What we’ve said as Emirates is if you’re going to do the Neo, we’re in for 100,” he said at the World Economic Forum. “Put it on the table, we’ll start off for you.” Dubai-based Emirates has 57 A380s already in its fleet with 15 more arriving this year out of an order for 140 in total, it said Jan. 13. A Neo development would cut seat-mile costs by a further 10 to 13 percent, said the executive, who could expect to pay far below the list price as a major buyer, while a failure to keep the A380 going would leave Airbus with a thin lineup in the large wide-body sector following the demise of the A340 model.

Another interesting tidbit, Clark noted that the A380s on the LHR routes are so popular that they average an occupancy rate of 90%.

Without this (or even with it), the A380 is done. This will save the 747, and validate Boeing’s decision to develop the 747-8.
