Last Day to Book Before IHG 2018 Changes

by Enoch

Two weeks ago, we wrote about the upcoming changes IHG is making in terms of award redemptions. 499 hotels will be going up in price, while 192 hotels will be going down in price. Additionally, 13 InterContinental Hotels will be jumping up to a new “category” that costs 70,000 IHG points per night. These changes will set in tomorrow, January 16, 2018, which means today will be the last day to book award stays at the old rates. As of today, you can book stays as far as December 31, 2018, meaning you can still lock in the current price for a New Year’s Eve stay.

You can view a full list of hotels affected here. However, I thought I’d cover some of the more notable changes, like the following 13 properties which will soon cost 70,000 points a night:

  • InterContinental ANA Manza Beach Resort Okinawa
  • InterContinental Bora Bora Resort Thalasso Spa
  • InterContinental Boston
  • InterContinental The Clement Moneterey
  • InterContinental Hong Kong
  • InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora
  • InterContinental London Park Lane
  • InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco
  • InterContinental New York Barclay
  • InterContinental New York Times Square
  • InterContinental Paris Le Grand
  • InterContinental San Francisco
  • InterContinental The Willard Washington DC

I do have to make a comment here. As far as I can tell, IHG didn’t actually tell anyone about these changes. It would appear that if it weren’t for a Flyertalk member discovering the page incidentally, and for people to discuss and report it widely, many people may not have even known about it (and many probably still don’t). Additionally, as far as I can recall, IHG also didn’t tell anyone other than Mommy Points that January 16, 2018 is when changes take effect. It’s not even on the official page listing all the hotels undergoing a change in award rate. That’s pretty crappy on IHG’s part, and I hope it’s not a trend that will continue.

Either way, today’s the last day to book before the changes that IHG told no one about set in. IHG award stays (with some exceptions) are fully refundable, so if you have any upcoming stays or trips planned, I’d lock in the price now.
