Shell’s Fuel Rewards program is a loyalty program that provides savings at Shell gas stations. Customers have the ability to earn discounts by spending at partner merchants (groceries stores, select restaurants, etc.) with an enrolled card, which can then be applied at the pump.
At the moment, Shell is offering Chase Freedom cardmembers free gold status in the Fuel Rewards program through 2018. You can simply enroll here, and with the status you will be able to save sat least 5 cents per gallon. The status usually requires 6 visits to Shell within a quarter, so it’s not the hardest to achieve, though this will give you a nice boost if or when you’re at a Shell gas station!
You can simply swipe the Shell Fuel Rewards card at the pump to apply the discount. Alliteratively, you can enter the ALT ID provided (usually your phone number), which is what I usually do. You won’t have to use your Chase Freedom card to get gas in order to receive the discount, but there might be a good reason to. For Q1 of 2018, gas stations are one of the categories that will earn you 5 points per dollar with the Chase Freedom card. That’s 5% in cash back, or if you also have a Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred card, 5 points you can transfer to any of the Ultimate Rewards partners.
As a reminder, Shell also partners with IHG to provide savings to IHG elites. You get the following discounts at the pump if you enroll your IHG number with Shell:
- Club or Gold Elite: 5 cents off per gallon
- Platinum Elite: 6 cents off per gallon
- Spire Elite: 7 cents off per gallon
This is not the same as having gold status, though the savings are applied the same way. They are also not stackable. so if you are IHG Platinum and enroll for gold status, you still only get 6 cents off per gallon. Status conferred by having a credit card (like getting Platinum status with the Chase IHG card) do count!
I’ve actually been getting gas at Shell locations more frequently, given how often I receive discounts with T-Mobile Tuesday. Frankly, this is not a significant enough discount to change my fueling habit, but I’d still enroll—you never know when you’d need gas with only a Shell station nearby!
