Are You A Food Cart Fanatic? Add This Place to Your Bucket List!

by Shelli Stein

Visiting ancient Pompeii might be on your bucket list for many reasons, and now I’m adding one more. Who would have thought they had fast-food eateries in Pompeii? A thermopolium, or as we call them food counters, has been discovered and excavated. Pompeii is about 18 miles southeast of Naples, Italy, and well worth a visit!

The community of Pompeii was buried in ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. The eruption killed hundreds of people. The ash, however, acted as a preservation agent creating what researchers call an archeological gold mine. The ash preserved many items teaching us much about the everyday life of the people of Pompeii.

It’s not that these food stalls weren’t popular in Pompeii. They were both popular and common. But this stall was the first to be excavated in its entirety.

Don’t waste your miles and points! When I book award tickets for my international travels, I always rely on! They get me the best deals.

What’s On An Ancient Roman Menu?

Curious about the menu served by an ancient Roman street food vendor? The researchers found remnants of duck, goat, pig, fish, and snails in earthen pots, sometimes combined in the same dish. Crushed beans were found in a jar, likely used to modify the taste and color of wine.

The artwork and illustrations that appear on this themopolium appear to be depictions of the stall itself, almost like a logo or trademark.

Take a look at this story and article and see for yourself.

Final Thoughts On Visiting Pompeii

I’ve been to Pompeii and found it an incredibly interesting, fascinating, way to take in some ancient history. Heading to southern Italy? Is visiting Pompeii in your travel plans or maybe you’ve already seen this in person. If so, let us know what’s it’s like up close and in person.

Did some more research because I am headed to Sorrento and Naples in April and will do a day trip to Pompeii. This thermopolium was unearthed in 2019 and is open to the public I believe. Cannot wait!
