It’s not just London airports that will have strikes in the near future. As pro-democracy protests continue to ramp up in Hong Kong, organizers are planning a large-scale Hong Kong strike that will disrupt travel in the coming days.
One of the largest Hong Kong city-wide strikes is expected tomorrow, August 5th, with thousands expected to participate. That includes not only public transportation disruptions around the city, but also at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).
The South China Morning Post is reporting that HKG will close one of its runways (down to one from two) as it expects many air traffic controllers and other airport staff to call in sick as part of the strike.
That means delays and cancellations that will likely have a ripple effect for days. Hong Kong’s airport has a notice posted on to their website about the situation.
Hong Kong Strike: Cathay Pacific Cancels Dozens Of Flights, More Possible Soon
Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific also has posted a warning about disruptions, where dozens of flights have already been cancelled. A full list of cancellations as well as their travel notice can be found here.
Cathay even goes as far to “recommend customers postpone non-essential travel on this day.”
A travel waiver is in effect and free rerouting and rebooking will be allowed on Cathay flights that are scheduled for August 5-6.
If you are planning on traveling to, from, or through Hong Kong in the next several days, pay particularly close attention to your itinerary.
